by Alexander the Great in 331 B.C., just after his arrival in Egypt. \par
The city of Alexandria was monumental and imposing, with a grid of wide streets and a central thoroughfare. \par
It was dominated by the splendid Temple of Pan, built on a podi
um in the Eastern tradition, with an avenue winding round up to it. \par
The famous library contained the biggest collection of books of the ancient world. \par
It was attached to the Museum, that is the academy and the seminary for scientific and lite
rary scholarship that acted as a centre that gave rise to studies in philology, criticism, physical and mathematical sciences, philosophy and medicine.
